A day’s worth of work

I spent most of the day today finishing up the jewelry I had started last week and taking care of some custom orders.

•My friend M.’s favorite ring had lost a pearl and she had asked me to see if I could fix it. I recreated the shape of the pearl in recycled silver and placed it back into her ring. I hope she likes it!

•One of my youngest customers R. had asked me to create a pendant from a piece of tiger’s eye she had.

•I have been wanting to create a bird pendant for a long time.

•I created another pair of simple leaf earrings.

•I finished 9 air pendants so that I can fill some orders. Thanks for supporting lung cancer research by purchasing an air necklace.

Aprikosenkuchen and jewelry

I spend the day making jewelry and more importantly Aprikosenkuchen (apricot pies). After calling my dad in Switzerland for the recipe, I got to work. I wasn’t sure how they would turn out. For the last hour our house has been filled with such a familiar sweet smell. So many childhood memories have been rushing into my head. I just took the pies out of the oven and couldn’t resist having a couple of pieces. Oh god they are so good. Almost as good as my dad’s and for sure amazing for my first try.

Trying to relax

So my first week of holidays is almost over and I have to say it was the least relaxing week off I have ever had. I made myself a promise this morning that the rest of my holidays I will be relaxed and not worry about anything except painting and relaxing.

It wasn’t all bad and I had some wonderful times with friends, went to the lake, found a great dresser that we will be using as our vanity, started some sketches for my upcoming solo exhibition and almost finished my book for my first book club meeting tonight. It was a bit of a hard read but I like new experiences and I have never been part of a book club before.

At the Farmer’s Market

If you are looking for something nice to do this weekend, come to the Forks and visit me at the Farmer’s Market. I am sharing a table with the fabulous ceramic artist Charlene Brown. So there will be lots of eco-friendly jewelry, photography, textile products such as purses, cup cozies and hair accessories and of course pottery from clayhaus. The Farmer’s Market takes place in the Market Plaza from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. See you on Sunday!

weekend look

Here is another flower I created this weekend to go with my summery outfit. Super easy to make. I just cut out a string of pedals using the lining of an old jacket (perfect use for the lining of a jacket I had used to make cup cozies). I stitched one long line through the fabric and in the end gathered it all together and voila a funky flower was born from a piece of old clothing. Inspired by a wedding shower game

It was a big day on Sunday. I was going to my first ever wedding shower. I had heard many stories, not all good and I was feeling a bit nervous about it.

The shower turned out to be a positive surprise. It turned out that everybody was really nice and welcoming, the gifts the bride received were all so personal and amazing and even the games I had been dreading were fun. The old “make a wedding gown out of toilet paper” was so much fun. I have to say that we had a bit of an advantage having lots of creative people on our team and the gown ended up looking pretty good. As part of the gown I had created a large flower head-piece a la Carrie Bradshaw, which everybody commented on and it inspired me to try it out with fabric that night. I started with an old polka dot scarf and recycled the material. I made the flower smaller and attached it to a headband I already had and voila I had something way more interesting than my old headband. Last night I took some feathers off a headband that had broken and made a new one out of it. I am so excited and I am going to try out some more fun flowers and maybe incorporate some feathers and make some more head pieces, so make sure to check back.

Recycle. Reuse. Recreate.

Philanthropic jewelry for lung cancer research

I am sure you have all experienced things in life that are such a coincidence that you know they were just meant to be.

While at the Forks selling my jewelry and photography I was approached in regards to custom jewelry. I thought the inquiry was about creating an individual piece of jewelry for this client but it turned out that she was looking for philanthropic jewelry to help fundraise for a cause. It turned out that the cause was lung cancer research, which seemed too strange at the time considering that just 2 weeks earlier my father-in-law “Jack” had just passed away from lung cancer. “It was just meant to be”.

So in the last month I have designed and produced a piece of jewelry made from recycled materials, that will be used to help fundraise for this Sunday’s “Inspire for Life – Manitoba’s Walk for Lung Cancer” event. The event takes place at the Forks. Registration begins at 10:00 a.m. and the walk begins at 11:00 a.m. All net proceeds of the event will go to lung cancer research at the Cancer Care Manitoba Foundation.

Here is a picture of the final product. The concept chosen shows the word “air” in a simple font on 100% recycled silver. I wanted to simplify and boil it down to the essence “air”. We all need air to breathe and to live. I have seen first hand the struggle of not getting enough air into your lungs anymore. The concept is graphic, clean and creates a nice balance between the simply graphic type and the organic shape and material of the beach glass. Each piece of beach glass is unique and different just like the lives effected by lung cancer.

I am very grateful to have the opportunity to do this in Jack’s honour. I miss him a lot and I know he would be very proud of me.

If you would like to order your own “air” necklace you can order them at the walk this weekend for $49 (there will be a limited number available for sale, so if you want to buy one at the event make sure to get there early). You can also contact me directly at anjastudios@shaw.ca to put in your order. The pendant is made from recycled silver and beach glass and comes on a 18″ sterling silver chain. The “air necklace” will be available year round with 100% of profit going to lung cancer research.

99 pieces of art… submission

This morning was the submission deadline for the “99 pieces of art on the wall” exhibition at the cre8ery gallery. I am very excited that 2 of my photographs have been accepted. The exhibition will be on from August 18 until September 2. I will blog more details on the exhibit at a later date.

Wishing for Spring

It’s been pretty nasty outside today and it really is supposed to snow tomorrow. Oh Winnipeg! My family and friends in Switzerland often don’t believe me when I tell them about the weather here. It’s just so crazy to think that 8 weeks ago when I arrived in Switzerland spring had already arrived and flowers and trees were starting to bloom. I am holding on to those memories and hopefully that will get me through the next couple of days. I know summer is close but I just miss spring. It’s one of my favourite seasons and it pretty much doesn’t exist here. Maybe I just need to go home to Switzerland more often in spring. Here are a few pictures. The weather was beautiful, temperatures were around 15 degrees and the smell of spring was in the air.
